Kids Chalkboard: A Stylish Font for Small Business Branding

Choosing the Right Typeface for a Bakery’s Packaging Upgrade

As a creative consultant working with small businesses, I recently helped a local bakery refresh their packaging. They wanted something that felt warm, approachable, and a little whimsical—perfect for their line of artisanal cookies and cupcakes. That’s when I introduced them to Kids Chalkboard, a bold, handwritten chalk font designed for child-friendly projects but with surprising versatility for small brands.

The bakery’s original packaging was plain and generic. It didn’t reflect the care and creativity that went into their baked goods. We knew typography would play a big role in changing that. Choosing the right typeface wasn’t just about aesthetics—it was about making a first impression that said, “You’re in for something special.”

What Makes Kids Chalkboard Stand Out

Kids Chalkboard is a script font with a playful, hand-drawn charm. It mimics the look of real chalk on a blackboard, giving it a tactile, nostalgic feel. The letters are bold, with uneven edges and a slightly bouncy baseline that adds to its fun personality. It’s not meant for long paragraphs or fine print, but rather for short, attention-grabbing text like headlines, titles, and labels.

What stood out during our design process was how well it balanced legibility and character. Even with its rough texture and casual look, the font remained clear and readable at a glance—especially important for packaging that needs to communicate quickly. It brought a handmade, personal touch that helped the bakery stand out on shelves and online photos.

Using Kids Chalkboard Across Brand Materials

We used Kids Chalkboard across several touchpoints: product labels, thank-you cards, social media templates, and even the bakery’s Instagram story highlights. It worked especially well on kraft paper labels and white boxes, where the contrast between the chalky black text and natural tones gave the brand a clean yet cozy feel.

For digital use, we applied the font in Instagram carousels and seasonal promotions. The font’s bold nature made headlines pop even on small phone screens. On printed thank-you cards, it added a personal, handwritten note effect that customers responded to warmly.

We avoided using it for long-form content, like ingredient lists or detailed descriptions, where a clean sans serif font was more appropriate. Instead, we reserved Kids Chalkboard for headlines, brand names, and short phrases like “Handmade with Love” or “Fresh Daily.”

How Typography Builds Brand Trust

Typography isn’t just about making things look pretty—it’s about building a consistent brand identity. When a small business uses the same font styles across packaging, social media, and print materials, it creates a visual thread that customers begin to recognize and trust.

Kids Chalkboard helped the bakery feel more polished without losing its cozy, local charm. It gave their brand a unified look that translated well from physical products to digital presence. Customers began to associate the chalky, bold lettering with quality and care—subtle but powerful brand signals.

Typography shapes how people feel about your brand before they even read the words. A display font like this one can make a brand feel more personable and memorable, especially when used thoughtfully and consistently.

Pairing Kids Chalkboard with Other Fonts

One of the best ways to use a bold, decorative font like Kids Chalkboard is to pair it with a simpler, more neutral font. We chose a clean sans serif for body text and supporting copy, which created a nice visual balance.

This pairing strategy kept the brand playful but professional, and ensured that the chalk font never overwhelmed the design.

Things to Consider Before Using Kids Chalkboard

Before adopting any commercial font, it’s important to check what’s included in the license. Kids Chalkboard comes with multiple file formats and supports a wide range of languages, which made it a solid choice for both printed packaging and digital use.

We also tested the font at different sizes to ensure it remained legible on small product tags and mobile screens. While it works beautifully at medium to large sizes, we found that anything below 12pt became too hard to read—especially on printed materials.

It’s also worth exploring the font’s alternates and ligatures, which can add variety and customization to headlines and logos. These small touches help make the font feel more unique and tailored to your brand.
